The body of the administrator of the monarch butterfly sanctuary in Michoacan was found dumped in a well this week, presumably the target of an assassination.
Homero Gomez disappeared on January 13, and his body was discovered more than a week later in the municipality of Ocampo.
Gomez was a tireless defender of environmental causes, and frequently at odds with loggers and wood smugglers, whose illegal activities threaten the butterflies’ natural habitats.
