Jalisco leads the way in flu fatalities

Although the dreaded coronavirus has yet to leave its mark on Jalisco,  this state has the dubious honor of having registered more deaths from “regular” influenza this season than any other Mexican entity.

Jalisco heads the list with 20 fatalities caused by the 2019-20 circulating flu strains.  Jalisco and four other areas – Ciudad de México, Hidalgo, Estado de México and Veracruz – account for  43.3 percent of all influenza deaths in Mexico this season.

According to the Jalisco Health Department (Secretaría de Salud), 1.95 million flu shots have been administered  in the state over the past few months – 92 percent of the department’s original target.

Health Secretary Fernando Petersen Aranguren pointed out that only one of the 20 patients who succumbed to the flu virus had obtained an inoculation.
