Jalisco looks at possibility of purchasing vaccines

Jalisco Governor Enrique Alfaro has set up a working committee to explore the possibility of purchasing 500,000 doses of Covid-19 vaccines to “augment” the ongoing national vaccination program.

The committee – to be headed by Javier Orendáin de Obeso, president of the Guadalajara branch of the National Chamber of Commerce – will include representatives from state and municipal governments, as well as the private sector.

The move comes on the heels of a decision by the federal government allowing state governments and private businesses in Mexico to purchase and administer Covid vaccines (see sidebar in box).

Alfaro, however, warned that obtaining vaccines this year will be a challenge, especially since many of the pharmaceutical companies that have developed vaccines are finding it difficult to honor prior commitments made to national governments.
