Jalisco ever-present at Paralympics

Jalisco swimmer Arnulfo Castorena is looking to add to his impressive medal collection, as he competes in his sixth Paralympic Games, which got underway in Tokyo on August 24.

pg3The 43-year-old has already won two golds, two silvers and one bronze medal in previous games.

Born in Guadalajara in 1978 without a left arm and with underdeveloped legs, Castorena made it to his first Paralympics in Sydney at age 22, winning the gold medal in the 50-meter breaststroke competition, category SB2.

Talking to the Reporter prior to the 2012 London Games, Castorena opened up on his childhood living with a family of drug addicts after his mother died giving birth to him, and his father abandoned him.  “There were times I wanted to die because I suffered a lot,” he said. “I didn’t have the care of my parents when I was a child. I didn’t have the care of my family.”
