Arrests of women in youth slaying unjustified, families say

Family members of two women arrested in connection with the murder of 16-year-old Eduardo Salomón staged a protest last weekend, insisting that their relatives are scapegoats and have nothing to do with the crime.

A judge this week ruled that Elvia and María Guadalupe “G” and Jesús Erasmo “N” should stay in “preventive detention” for at least one year as the investigation concludes.

In a case of what authorities believe was mistaken identity, Eduardo was abducted from his house in Tlajomulco while caring for his younger siblings. His body was discovered at an abandoned property two days later.

Relatives of Elvia and María Guadalupe “G” say police detained the pair only because they acted as “guarantors” on the property that had been rented by Jesús Erasmo “N” (who has also been detained), and had no idea that it would be used for nefarious purposes. The two women have no other link to Salomón’s murder, their relatives insist.

The Federal Prosecutor’s Office (FGE) replied this week that their investigation indicates that the women signed as guarantors for the property just a few days before Eduardo’s body was found there, which inextricably links them to the crime.
