Despite new bike paths, cycling in metro area is still hazardous

A 40-year-old male cyclist who died after being hit by a truck on Avenida Juan Gil Preciado in Zapopan on December 7 was the 16th such fatality reported in the Guadalajara metropolitan area during 2023, according to Bici Blanca, an NGO that maintains a website of data about cycling in the city (bicicletablanca.org).

Since 2009, when Bici Blanca began its work, 314 cyclists have died on the streets and avenues of Guadalajara. Even though the current administration of Governor Enrique Alfaro has opened many more kilometers of cycle lanes in the past five years, 80 cyclists have perished in the metro area during this time.

The comprehensive Bici Blanca website lists the names and ages of each of the victims, where the accidents occurred, their cause, and a link to a newspaper article or social media report, if available.  The stats also indicate the type of vehicle involved in the fatal accident. In around 20 percent of the cases, a public transportation vehicle was either involved or at fault.

The driver of the truck involved in the December 7 accident reportedly fled the scene.
