Lawmakers take action as rents soar in Jalisco

Although the Jalisco government has repeatedly raised the possibility of capping rental prices to address growing concerns over housing affordability, the state legislature has been notably slow to act.

pg1dBut as property rental prices in Jalisco rise faster than most people’s incomes, several state lawmakers are pushing hard for stricter rent control measures.

Last week, two legislators—Omar Cervantes Rivera of the Movimiento Ciudadano and Mariana Casillas Guerrero of Futuro—launched separate initiatives aimed at better protecting tenants from sharp rent increases.

Cervantes initiated the first in a series of planned forums and working groups, bringing together government officials, mayors, notaries, developers, landlords, housing specialists and civil society representatives. The goal, he says, is to develop concrete proposals for a new Ley de Rentas (Rental Law).
