Opera from San Jose, California

The free Tuesday, August 19 “Martes de Música y Opera” performance  at Guadalajara’s Teatro Degollado will feature Opera Cultura from San Jose, California, along with a local string group, the all-female Nima Quartet.

The program will feature excerpts from composer Hector Armienta’s new song cycle opera, Cuentos de Peregrinacíon (Tales of Pilgrimage).. Mezzosoprano Guadalupe Peraza and soprano Alexandra Sessler will be joined by San Jose community members, with Armienta accompanying them on piano. In addition, Mexican tenor Guido Augusto Rochin will perform work by Mexican composers and music from the Zarzuela repertoire.

Opera Cultura San Jose’s mission is to explore the Latino-Hispanic cultural experience through music, theater and opera, and provide opportunities for the community to participate as creators, learners and performers. The Guadalajara performance is the first step in a new cross-cultural exchange initiative,  Arte sin Fronteras (Art without Borders), a collaboration between Opera Cultura, the cities of San Jose and Guadalajara, and the Mexican Consulate in San Jose.

The recital starts at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 19 at the Teatro Degollado. No tickets are sold; just turn up in good time.
