Where to see Day of the Dead altars in Guadalajara

The metropolitan area boasts a full Day of the Dead cultural agenda, highlighted by many displays of traditional altars in prominent cultural spaces.

Downtown

- Museo Panteón de Belén, Belén 684, corner of Eulogio Parra. Offering to departed souls. Thursday, October 29 to Thursday, November 6, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Cost 23 pesos.

- Museo Regional de Guadalajara, Liceo 60. Altar dedicated to museum curator Rafael Ruíz Briseño “Pava.” Saturday, November 1, 4-9 p.m., Sunday, November 2, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Bohemian Burial – songs and poetry of mystery on Sunday, 6:30 p.m.

- Instituto Cultural Cabañas, Plaza Tapatia. Altar open Sunday, November 2, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

- Museo de las Artes Populares, Calle San Felipe 211. Altar open Saturday, November 1, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, November 2, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Special Dia de los Muertos events at 7 p.m. on both days.

- Casa Museo López Portillo, Liceo 177. Altar dedicated to the Vivanco sisters, founders of Chocolate Vivanco in 1955. Sunday, November 2, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

- Museo de la Ciudad de Guadalajara, Independencia 684. Altar open Saturday, November 1, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Sunday, November 2, 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

- Ex-Convento del Carmen, Avenida Juarez 638, corner of Pavo. Altar dedicated to departed children, open Thursday, October 30 to Sunday, November 2, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

- Museo de Paleontologia, Dr. R. Michel 520, corner of Calzada González Gallo, behind Parque Agua Azul. Altar open Saturday, November 1, from noon, plus contest of calaveras dedicated to Jalisco’s prehistoric animals.

Chapultepec area

- Cafe Rojo, Guadalupe Zuno 2027 near Av. Chapultepec. Altar dedicated to acclaimed author Gabriel Garcia Marquez,

- Paseo Chapultepec, Avenida Chapultepec. Saturday, November 1, exposition of catrinas at 6 p.m., dance and theater at 8 p.m. and Mercedes Medina in concert at 9 p.m. with “The dead come singing.”

Tlaquepaque

- Centro Cultural El Refugio, Donato Guerra 160. Nightly tours with tales of historical legends and ghosts, 10 p.m. Cost 80 pesos.
Tonala

- Plaza Cihualpilli (city’s main plaza). Day of the Dead festival begins on Friday, October 31 with a concert by the Da Vinci Chamber Orchestra and the dedication of an altar honoring two influential educators at 7 p.m.

Outside Guadalajara

- Guachimontones Interpretive Center, Teuchitlan. Prehistoric dance performance, “Funeral Narrations, The Dead of Guachimontones” on Friday, October 31, 7-9 p.m. Limited to 120 people. Call 045 384-109-0388 for information. Exposition of altars dedicated to “our ancestors,” Sunday, November 2. Cost 30 pesos.
