Monday music

Classical concerts are held each Monday at this classy and relatively new cultural complex to the north of the city.   June 19: Interpreting selections from the classical canon (exact program TBD) are violinist Alvaro Larez and pianist Manuel Delaflor.  June 26: Two giants of jazz guitar present an homage to the past greats of jazz guitar whose pioneering efforts inspired them as young musicians.  Larry Carlton and John Scofield, both in their late-sixties, are among the most revered exponents of their instruments in the field of jazz today.

Tuesday recitals

The Jalisco Culture Secretariat’s “Martes de Música y Ópera” series showcases talented classical musicians at free-of-charge Tuesday evening recitals.   June 20: Singer David de la Mora and pianist Timothy Ruff Welch will present “Canciones del Mundo”, a program of works by Bellini, Vaughn Williams, Ennio Morricone and others.  June 27: Ancient music group Volta gives a concert. Various composers’ work will be presented in as historically-faithful fashion as possible.

Classic Rock Tribute Festival 

Returning to Teatro Diana for its fifth go-round is the Classic Rock Festival, in which three cover bands pull out all the stops to bring the spectator impeccably rendered simulations of live performances by The Doors, Led Zeppelin and Guns N’ Roses.  Impersonating these three legendary rock outfits are, respectively, DOF, Black Dog and The Appetites.  The first two bands hail from Mexico City, while the third has roots in Guadalajara.

Maryta Humahuaca

One of Argentina’s lesser known regions, the northwest province of Jujuy has more in common culturally with Bolivia than Buenos Aires.  Representing the area is Maryta Humahuaca, a singer with a highly unique voice.

Amelie soundtrack for piano

Composer Yann Tierson’s acclaimed, wildly popular score for the smash hit film Amelia, released in 2001, has been arranged for piano by Roberto Salomon, a Mexican pianist, who will also perform the music.  The concert will consist of 30 short pieces, many of whose themes are instantly recognizable and highly flavored with Gallic wistfulness.

Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra

Under the baton of Marco Parisotto, the JPO interprets three works by Mozart: Symphony No. 31 “Paris”, Symphony No. 36 “Linz” and Symphony No. 38 “Prague.”

Alice in Wonderland, the musical

If you’ve brought life into the world and they’re is still of a tender age, then the musical production by Calle 42, a school for musical theater in Zapopan, of Alice in Wonderland might be just the thing to light up their imagination.  Over 70 actors will be on stage to breath life into Lewis Carroll’s classic of surreal fantasy.

Ballet Folflorico UdeG

Regarded as the best folk dance troupe in Mexico, the Ballet Folklorico of the Universidad de Guadalajara returns for another season of summer shows on Sunday evenings. See dances from all over the country, as well as emotive local favorites, such as the “Jarabe Tapatio” and “La Culebra.” Not to be missed!

Willy Colón

The trombonist and vocalist, considered a living legend of salsa music, is coming to Guadalajara as a part of a tour celebrating 50 years as a recording artist.  A Nuyorican (Puerto Rican New Yorker) from his birth in 1950, Colón was raised in the culturally diverse South Bronx.  He recorded his first record in 1967 at the age of 17.

Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra

Guest conductor Sacha Goetzel presents “1001 Arabian Nights,” with soloist Philippe Quint on violin. The program includes Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin,” Barber’s “Concerto for Violin and Orchestra” and Rimski-Korsakov’s “Scheherazade.”

Youth Folkloric Ballet

The Ballet Folclorico Infantil de la Universidad de Guadalajara, one the nation’s premier folkloric dance companies, presents their new show, Animalia.  The show will feature, in addition to their impeccably choreographed and executed movements, dazzling costumes representing a variety of animals.

Clayton Brothers

Presented by the NY Jazz All Stars. This quintet is the brainchild of Jeff Clayton, who plays alto sax and oboe, in addition to the French horn and flute.

Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra

Gershwin, Reveultos, Marquez and Alvarez are the featuring composer in the final concert of the summer season. Marco Parisotto conducts, with percussion group Tambuco the invitees.

The Netherlands Dance Company

After a two-decade absence, the Netherlands Dance Theater is back. The 58-year-old company will present kinetically exquisite work from their in house corp of choreographers, which include Hans Van Manen, Johan Inger, Edward Clug and director Paul Lightfoot.

Antonio Gades Flamenco 

Company

CIA Antonio Gades, one of the most prestigious flamenco dance companies of our time, offer a spectacle sure to sizzle and pop your sexual circuitry.  Named in honor of its deceased founder, the company is currently under the direction of Stella Arauzo and Dominique You.

The Pink Floyd Show

Harley Davidson and W Agency present an homage to the great progressive space rock band that came out of Britain in the late 1960s, most well-known for their albums “The Dark Side of the Moon” and “The Wall.”  The two aforementioned enterprises dig into their deep pockets to put together a crack team of visual artists, technicians and musicians for a mind-expanding trip through time and space.

US National Youth Orchestra

Launched in the summer of 2013, the National Youth Orchestra of the United States played venues around the world to great acclaim, from Saint Petersburg to Los Angeles.  This year marks the orchestra’s Central and South American debut, which will be under the direction of conductor Marin Alsop.  The concert’s program is TBA.

Miles Davis & Gil Evans

Gil Cervantes and his orchestra will present a program of music paying tribute to one of the mid-20th Century’s greatest partnerships: jazz trumpet giant Miles Davis and arranger/conductor Gil Evans.  Together, these two men gifted to the world vinyl masterpieces such as Porgy and Bess, Miles Ahead, and most prominently, Sketches of Spain.  Bravely holding down the trumpet chair will be Canadian Lina Allemano.
