GALA open-air gallery to put an innovative twist on art shows

Galeria al Aire Libre Axixic (GALA) will come to life Saturday, February 6, 4 p.m., introducing a ground-breaking concept for an open-air art gallery set at the Ajijic plaza that will be tied into stimulus for social activism.

The project is the brainchild of local photographer Xill Fessenden, whose aim is to bring top quality art shows to the village, with a focus on themes that will serve as catalysts for community projects and help raise public awareness on local ecological issues. She will curate the 2016 season with the goal of putting on four major exhibitions in the course of the year.

GALA’s inaugural program will showcase Sanmigueleñas, a collection of works by award-winning Mexican photographer Marcela Taboada. The stunning images are portraits of girls and young women dressed in native attire and festooned with fresh produce just harvested from organic family gardens raised in the Oaxacan village of San Miguel del Valle.

To complement the exhibit, the Centro Cultural Ajijic will open its doors at 6 p.m. for a conference on organic farming and school gardens presented by Lorena Harp, coordinator of environmental projects for Fundación Alfredo Harp-Halu Oaxaca, the non-profit foundation that developed the San Miguel home garden initiative.

Fessenden extends an open invitation to local organic growers and pro-environment groups interested in setting up displays linked to the exhibit’s subject matter. Contact her at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for full details.
