LLT ends 61st season with gothic horror play

Lakeside Little Theatre (LLT) will open the final production of its 61st season, “The Woman in Black,” written by Stephen Mallatratt and directed by Paul Kloegman, on Friday, April 3.

Adapted from Susan Hill’s gothic horror novel of the same name, “The Woman in Black” premiered in London in 1987 and became the UK’s second-longest-running stage play. In 2012, it was turned into a film starring Daniel Radcliffe.

pg17cAn accountant hires a young actor to help him tell his story in the hopes of finally exorcising a fear that has gripped him for many years. As the two act out the accountant’s memory, the audience finds itself immersed in a story within a story within a story.

British reviewer Lisa in the Theatre wrote, “I don’t think I’ve ever been as scared in a theatre.” New York reviewer Diep Tran concurred, “I’ve experienced my share of Halloween-themed theatre ... But what I’ve rarely experienced was a room where audience members screamed in fright from all directions.”

LLT’s production of “The Woman in Black” will star two of the theatre’s most experienced and respected actors, Mark Donaldson and Ken Yakiwchuk.

“This is the first two-person production I’ve ever done,” Donaldson explained. “The challenge of being responsible for half of the script is compounded by the fact that I play seven different characters. Each rehearsal uncovers nuances and moments that are making our telling of the story more real, more horrifying. Working with this incredible team is an experience that I can never forget and I hope our audiences are transported with us to a place and time that they will not forget, either.”

“The Woman in Black” will run from April 3 to 12. Matinees (Saturdays, Sundays and Tuesday) are at 4 p.m., evening shows (Wednesday, Thursday and Fridays) at 7:30 p.m. Tickets, 400 pesos, are available at lakesidelittletheatre.com.
