Rehearsals are well under way for Los Cantantes del Lago’s 2014 Spring Concert – “Nature’s Music,” directed by Timothy G. Ruff Welch at the Auditorio de la Ribera on Tuesday, March 25, 7 p.m. and Wednesday, March 26, 4 p.m.
Throughout the two-week run of the Scotiabank Northern Lights Music Festival, another key player has been working tirelessly behind the scenes – Leyland Hiphner, a luthier who is in Ajijic by courtesy of his employers, Geo. Heinl & Co of Toronto.
Derived from the French word for lute, a luthier makes or repairs stringed instruments: violins, violas, cellos, basses, guitars, etc. These are usually divided into two categories, instruments that are plucked and instruments that are bowed. (A bow-maker is an archetier ... but that’s another story.)
Authors Lawrence Hill, Miranda Hill, Claudia Long and John Scherber spent two full days sharing experiences, inspirations and practical tips with some 70 curious local scribes as guest presenters at the 10th Annual Lake Chapala Writers Conference, held February 26-28 at Ajijic’s Danza del Sol.
The Auditorio de la Ribera was packed for the Scotiabank Northern Lights Music Festival’s Closing Gala on Saturday, March 1. The selection of music and the quality of the performances – both individual and collective – ensured a memorable night for both musicians and audience members alike.
A month before the rest of the world gets to see the feature film “Redwood Highway” starring Shirley Knight and Tom Skerritt, Ajijic gets three more chances. James Twyman, the producer and co-screenwriter of the film, moved to the area six weeks ago and decided to give the Lake Chapala region the first sneak peak at the movie. Three screenings at El Piano Rojo sold out in a matter of days, so Twyman has decided to add three more.
Written and directed by Barbara Clippinger, Lakeside Little Theatre’s current production, “Hooray for Hollywood” is more than just another review. It has a storyline and a very interesting one at that. Clippinger’s plot cleverly focuses on the large number of popular and well-known songs that were never even nominated for an Academy Award.
La Bodega de Ajijic Restaurant presents a dinner/concert featuring renowned folksinger/songwriter Francisco “Paco” Padilla on Friday, March 7, starting 7:30 p.m. Tickets are 250 pesos per person and include dinner. Reservations are a must.
