Circus arts

MAY CULTURAL FESTIVAL.  Contemporary circus arts group Les 7 Doigts de la Main from Quebec close the festival with their acclaimed show, “Traces,” described by the New York Times as “a dose of pure urban adrenaline.” 

Tuesday recitals
The Martes de Música y Ópera series sponsored by the Jalisco Culture Department attracts some truly stellar classical performers and it’s all free!  Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. On May 24: Songs from Spain with Teresa Banderas (mezzosoprano) and Jose Guadalupe Lopez Luevano (guitar). May 31: Recital with Brandon Sulbaran (violin) and Rosa Maria Valdez (piano).
Teatro Alarife Martin Casillas. Tuesdays, 8 p.m. Free.

Eight of Ludwig van Beethoven’s nine symphonies will be performed as part of the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra’s summer season, which kicks off at the Teatro Degollado on June 9.

MAY CULTURAL FESTIVAL.

The festival opens with Antonio Gades Company from Spain giving two presentations of the famous ballet “Carmen,” with music by Bizet.  

Romeo & Juliet

In honor of the 400th anniversary of the death of English literary great William Shakespeare and International Dance Day, the Ballet Jalisco and the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra team up for a special presentation of this famous classical dance work telling the familiar tale of two young lovers at the mercy of powerful families and their own hearts, set to Prokofiev’s soaring score.
