Swimming with the sharks

No we’re not talking about hanging out with narcos at the local bar, we mean the real bad boys. The Guadalajara Zoo is charging up to three people a modest 200 pesos for 15 minutes immersed with the toothy tankmates at the Aquarium. The cost includes the loan of a neoprene wetsuit, a towel and a facemask. Even those who can’t swim can enter the water, as they are standing  in a special shark cage and a bubble of air fills top third of the cage. Sessions are every half hour from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday to Sunday. To make reservations call Danae o Ambar at (33)3674-4488, extension 135. You need to bring a swim suit, sandals and personal grooming items. Changing rooms and showers are available.

Super Bowl warmup

Only four NFL teams are still standing in this year’s mad grab for football’s ultimate attainment, Super Bowl victory and championship. This weekend the NFC and the AFC will play their conference championship games to decide the participants of North America’s biggest sporting event.

The New England Patriots represent the new, pass-heavy NFL against the more balanced Baltimore Ravens for the AFC championship. The Patriots are currently seven point favorites, despite a defense that gave up 4,703 passing yards, the second-most in NFL history (this year’s Packers were number one).

In the NFC, The San Francisco 49ers are only two and a half point favorites when the New York Giants roll in to Candlestick Park. The 49ers’ home field advantaged will be counterbalanced by a Giants coach who has the second-most road playoff victories in NFL history, including The Giants’ storied 2008 championship run.

Look for the Ravens-Patriots game on ESPN at 2 p.m. on Sunday and the Giants-49ers on Fox Sports on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. or at your local sports bar. In Guadalajara, Chili’s, Outback, Wing’s Army and the other usual suspects apply.

- Guadalajara Chivas vs. Tijuana (Estadio Omnilife) Saturday, January 21, 7 p.m.
