Tlaqueparte

Head over to Tlaqueparte this weekend (or Monday and Tuesday) for a mind-boggling array of creative crafts, decorations and gifts from all over Mexico and Latin America, as well as some other nations.

At the Centro Cultural El Refugio, right in the heart of Tlaquepaque, you’ll find more than 70 exhibitors from the states of Jalisco, Queretaro, Guanajuato, Michoacan, Chihuahua, Puebla, Yucatan, Morelos, Campeche, Estado de Mexico, Coahuila, Veracruz, Hidalgo, Chiapas, Distrito Federal and Oaxaca.

Examples of the finest crafts from Cuba, Peru, Colombia, Paraguay, Ecuador, Argentina, Uruguay and Guatemala will also be on show and for sale. And keep an eye out for exotic items from Egypt, Indonesia, Morroco and India.

This year, Tlaqueparte’s entertainment will include free daily presentations of the Guelaguetza, the traditional folk dance festival which is celebrated in  Oaxaca at the end of July.  The participants come from different indigenous groups in the state and perform folk dances that are particular to their region. At the end of the performance they throw items to the crowd, products that come from the region they represent.

The biannual show runs from Friday, March 15 through Tuesday, March 19, and is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Entrance is free, except on Saturday and Sunday, when those aged 15 to 60 pay a nominal 10 pesos.  Refreshments are provided.
