Chili Cookoff gathers steam

Final planning for the 35th annual Mexican National Chili Cookoff has come to a full boil, but organizers of the giant charity event are still looking for a few candidates to complete the line-up of competitors.

The spicy culinary battle will run Friday, February 22 through Sunday, February 24, once again headquartered on the grounds of the Tobolandia Water Park, located just west of the Chapala-Jocotepec highway junction with the Libramiento by-pass. Proceeds are divided among eight lakeside non-profit groups.

Friday’s program will include a repeat of last year’s ground-breaking and wildly popular margarita mixing contest as well as chili cooking competition among professional restaurateurs. At the end of last week there was still space for one more margarita-maker and a couple of slots open in the chef’s section.
The Saturday competition in the home cook category is already fully booked for the 10-contestant maximum.
Sunday’s new feature is the Tournament of Champions, a match still open to both amateur and pro cooks who qualify as winners from any previous Mexican National event.
Competitor applications may be submitted by completing the online form posted at www.mexicannationalchilicookoff.com or through contact with cook coordinator Sharon Ford at This email address is being protected from spambots. Interested in volunteering to assist at the cook-off? A small number of positions still need to be filled in different areas. For details send a message to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
