Toga party supports Easter spectacle

Ajijic’s magnificent Easter Passion Play comes up for a 33rd encore during the last week of March, presented in episodes staged on Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.

The production depends upon broad community support, including not only the huge volunteer cast and crew that bring the story to life, but also those who chip in on materials and finances.

This year the Pasion de Cristo theater troupe and the independent Grupo Pro-Ajijic have come up with a novel idea for a public fund-raiser that taps into the script’s historical backdrop: a sumptuous banquet set out with all the trappings of the ancient Roman Empire. The party is scheduled for Saturday, February 9, 5 to 9 p.m., at the Ajijic plaza.
The menu includes finger-licking appetizers, oven roasted lamb and suckling pig with side dishes for the main course, and a delectable fruit dessert.
Service staff will be decked out in Roman attire drawn from the Passion lay wardrobe. Guests are encouraged to pick up on the theme by dressing up in togas, tunics, stollas, cloaks, sandals and other fashion trends of the era.
Guest services include live musical entertainment, a cash bar and valet parking for those wanting to step out of their chariots right at the gate. Tickets going for 350 pesos a pop are on sale at LCS, Manix, El Jardin and Diane Pearl.
