Operation Feed looks to expand

A feeding program, continuing its work for nearly 20 years without fanfare, Operation Feed has been dispensing food packages to the neediest residents of San Juan Cosala.

Each week, volunteers donate their time to purchase, prepare and hand out the packages containing cooking oil, three small packages of pasta, a bag of rice a bag of rolled oats and a bag of beans to 75 families. Families with infants receive a container of powdered milk every month.

Active with Operation Feed for the last several years, Agustin Vazquez, the owner of Restaurant Viva Mexico in San Juan Cosala, has contributed an enormous amount of time and energy to the program. His restaurant contacts allow him to purchase beans, rice and oats at much reduced prices; and thanks to his familiarity with the people of the village, he is able to select the families with the most urgent needs. These include elderly people with no family who cannot work, disabled people whose families are unable to support them, single parents who struggle to keep their families together, children who would suffer without the assistance given to their families, the unemployed or underemployed, who cannot earn enough to keep themselves and their families fed and those temporarily or permanently unable to work because of injury or illness.

Although it is not Operation Feed’s intention to meet all of the food needs of the families (530 people), many of them would starve without the help.

Now, volunteers are seeking funds to expand their operation to aid at least 20 more families that desperately need the assistance. The cost per family is about 300 pesos a month. Operation Feed relies completely on private donations and every peso donated goes toward the purchase of food.
