Rotary provides new student scholarship funds

Marvin Harthcock, a student advocate and teacher in the Lakeside area for more than 15 years, has been honored by the Rotary Club of Ajijic with a special fund.

The Harthcock Youth Student of the Year Scholarship will receive 500 dollars per calendar year for the next five years.

Harthcock, a Rotarian, will determine how the funds are distributed, according to his criteria concerning academic performance and character.

The Rotary Club have suggested that the funds be used as form of recognition and reward for being an all-round top youth student.

Harthcock is no stranger to the distribution of scholarships. High school (preparatoria) scholarships have been available to qualified students for approximately 15 years through the Golden Strings of Lake Chapala, of which Harthcock was the co-founder.

According to Harthcock, additional funds are needed to continue to offer scholarships. He says it costs approximately 500 dollars for one student for one year (books, lab fees and school supplies, etc.). Although part of the University of Guadalajara system,  public-funded preparatoria is not completely free in Jalisco.
