Rotary sponsored women’s golf tourney is big hit

The March 8 First Rotary International Women’s Golf Classic, co-chaired by Sandra Loridans and Rod Hensley at the Chapala Country Club, was an unmitigated success.

Eighty players formed 20 teams, with the day’s operation directed by club pro Ramiro Barajas and John Cearnal, president of the Club’s Golf Association.

Chapala Mayor Joaquin Huerta and Fire Chief Arturo Rivera were in attendance along with other local celebrities. Mexican golf stars Alejandra Martin del Campo and Shanti Granada conducted a golf clinic and expressed great enthusiasm for the event and promised to return next year.

In total, 190 people attended the awards presentation banquet and participated in a silent and live auction conducted by Pat Carroll.

The team taking first place was comprised of Joy Rathbone, Carol Mitchell, and two up and coming youngsters, 13-year-olds Montserrat “Monzie” Contreras and Nory Hernandez. Taking the second place were Maggie Pye, Sandy Keith, Karen Spencer and Sue Campbell. Third place went to the team of Stacy Girton, Sandra Rothwell, Karen Hertwich and Mary Bragg.

Besides providing a good time for all involved, the event netted more than 10,000 dollars that will be administered by the Ajijic Rotary Club for important community projects.
