Runners on call for Ajijic’s yearly Chupinaya challenge

Inscriptions are now open for Chupinaya 2013, Ajijic’s 17th annual mountain running challenge. The doubled-pronged race will take place Sunday, August 11, taking off from the central plaza at 10 a.m., rain or shine.

The main event is the brutal Solo para Salvajes (Only for Savages) competition, a 13.8-kilometer scramble through the village and up into the hills over treacherous terrain, peaking at the summit of the El Traveseño mountain range, set at 2,450 meters above sea level.

The lightweight recreational race follows a 6.5-kilometer route that turns back toward town about halfway up to the top.
Both contests are open to men and women, divided into various age categories from 12 years and up.

Payment of the 200-peso enrollment fee by August 4 entitles competitors to an official runner’s number, a souvenir tee-shirt, a medal for crossing the finish line and a hearty platter of seafood stew dished out at the post-race contestant’s feast. In addition, each runner will take home a coupon for a 20-percent discount on the purchase of selected models of La Sportiva brand athletic footwear.

Last-minute sign-ups, August 5 through 10, cost 250 pesos, with shirts and medals parceled out as far as supplies last.

Capacity is limited to 500 contestants.  Fees are payable to Bancomer Cuenta 2767962029, Sucursal 1065, in the name of Ricardo Gonzalez Gonzalez, or directly to Gonzalez or his spouse Isabel Pedroza at their glass and frame shop, located two blocks east of the plaza at Calle Guadalupe Victoria 38.
