Fleet-footed canines to showboat at second Dog Agility competition

Spectators are welcome as Lakeside hosts the second Western Mexico Open Dog Agility Competition on Saturday and Sunday, September 12 and 13 at the Hotel Perico on the Libramiento.

Designed to demonstrate a dog’s willingness to work with his/her handler in a variety of situations, agility is an athletic event that requires conditioning, concentration, training and teamwork. The aim of the sport is for the dogs to negotiate an obstacle course while racing against the clock.

Many handlers will be using this weekend’s event as a training exercise as they prepare their dogs for USDAA competitions.

There will be small, medium and large height categories and Grade 1 (novice) and advanced competition levels. There will be three courses on each day. Saturday will feature Jumpers, Agility (Standard) and the Tunnel Cup.  For those with puppies in training, the Puppy Tunnel Cup will be run for experience.  This competition is open to all dog handlers wishing to compete.

Californian Teri Thompson,  a certified USDAA judge and instructor at Happy Dog Agility in Moorepark, California, will judge the event. She regularly competes with her three Border Collies – Motion, Beep and Kiss – in USDAA and AKC events.

The competition will be held under the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) World Canine Organization agility rule standards even though it is not an officially sanctioned FCI event.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday, with competition on both days beginning at 9:30 a.m. and ending around 6 p.m.

There is no entry fee to attend, but parking is 20 pesos. Spectators should bring chairs as the hotel has a limited number. Beverages are available and Hotel Perico is serving a Mexican buffet menu starting at noon on both days.
