Recitals planned to fund children’s orchestra

A series of high-quality recitals to raise funds to help with the operating costs of the Lakeside Youth Philharmonic Orchestra is scheduled March 29 to April 2 at several locations. 

The principal goal of the Filarmónica Infantil de la Ribera de Chapala is to provide a musical education for lakeside children in vulnerable situations.

The recitals will feature teachers from the youth orchestra program, accompanied by Brazilian cellist Thiago Maximo Bezerra, the current director of the Youth Chamber Orchestra of Costa Rica, and his concert master, Zsolt Magyar from Colombia. 

Tuesday, March 29, 6 p.m.  A recital for two double basses and piano with Joshua Chavez, Arnoldo Valladares and Rodrigo Leal Murillo playing Giovani Bottesini’s “Passione Amorosa.” Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo (old train station), Chapala. Donations welcomed.

Wednesday, March 30, 7 p.m.: A dinner/concert with the group performing Jazz Manouche’s “Les Voyageurs.”  La Bodega Restaurant, Ajijic.  Tickets 250 pesos. 

Thursday, March 31, 7 p.m.A string quartet comprising youth orchestra teachers Juan Pablo Medeles (first violin), Sergio Medeles (second violin), Daniel Medeles (viola) and Thiago Máximo Bezerra (cello) will play Beethoven’s Opus 18 no. 1, as well as pieces by Astor Piazzola and other Brazilian composers. St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Riberas del Pilar. A cash bar is open from 6 p.m. Tickets 150 pesos. 

There will be a special event on Friday, April 1 at the Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo in Chapala. This will be an exclusive cocktail/concert for municipal authorities, representatives of various institutions and patrons of the youth orchestra. Holders of tickets for all of the three public events in the series will also receive invitations.

Saturday, April 2, 7 p.m. The Chamber Orchestra, consisting of youth orchestra teachers under the baton of Bezerra, presents the closing concert, with Edward Elgar’s “Serenade for Strings” as the principal piece. Hotel Real de Chapala, Ajijic. A cash bar is open from 6 p.m. Tickets 150 pesos.
