Toastmasters

“Building Enthusiasm” is the theme of the August meetings of Lake Chapala Bilingual Toastmasters Club. The group recently changed their meeting place to the Lake Chapala Society Sala.

The Monday, August 11 meeting, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., will be an English session where Spanish speakers can learn more English. The meeting on Monday, August 18 the language of the meeting switches to Spanish as the members conduct elimination contests in improvisation and evaluations. The winners will compete in Guadalajara.

Woodstock Anniversary

Thousands who planned to attend the Woodstock Festival – billed as three days of music for peace back in 1969 – didn’t get in the gate. They didn’t buy a ticket in advance.

Organizers of Lake Chapala Society’s 45th Woodstock Anniversary, scheduled Friday, August 16, remind area residents that tickets are on sale now at the LCS.

Folks will be sharing their memories and stories of where they were during that iconic weekend. Some attendees may be veterans of the original event.

From 3 to 7 p.m., the LCS grounds will be encapsulated in a balloon of the music of the day. Guadalajara’s Cosmic Rockers, with Edgardo Cedeno covering favorites from Jimi Hendrix, Santana, The Who, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, CSN&Y, Joe Cocker and many more.

Don’t forget there’s a bottle of Boone’s Farm for the guest with the best costume of the day. Get your Hippie on and be one of the first 100 through the gate to win a free brownie. Then there’s Electric Kool-Aid along with your other favorite drinks at the cash bar.

Unitarian Universalist

The Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship is not holding a service on Sunday, August. 10. The next service will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, August 17, at Rio Bravo 10.

Little Chapel by the Lake

The interdenominational congregation of the Little Chapel by the Lake will begin the schedule of worship on Sunday, August 10 with a 10:45 a.m. refreshment period shared with Christ Church Lakeside. The 11:15 a.m. worship service follows and includes the observance of communion.

“A Lesson in Hematology” will be the title of Rev. Gene Raymer’s message. He commented, “Our physical blood is responsible for making our brains function and our muscles work. It also takes part in fighting off diseases. Similarly, Jesus’ spirit symbolized in His blood helps us think and use our muscles in the right ways.When Satan seeks to weaken our faith, the spirit of Jesus is with us to fight the demonic infection.”

The Little Chapel by the Lake is located on the Carretera just east of the golf course in Chula Vista.

St. Andrew’s Anglican

During the Sunday, August 10, 10 a.m. worship service at St. Andrew’s Anglican church, Fr. Winston Welty’s sermon is “Why Not Walk On What Jesus Walked On When Jesus Walked On Water?” Based on the Biblical story which includes Jesus rebuking Peter’s lack of faith, the sermon poses some provocative questions about what faith.

The children’s bilingual Sunday School starts at St. Andrew’s each Sunday at 9:45 a.m. St. Andrew’s supports a local program to feed the hungry and is always grateful for non-perishable donations including beans, rice, lentils, pasta, salt, and oil. Donations can left in the baskets at the doors on the church on Sundays.

The “Company of Gentlemen” meets for their monthly breakfast at the church at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 13. For years this informal gathering has welcomed into fellowship the men of the parish and the community. Signing up on Sunday ensures enough food on Wednesday. St. Andrew’s Anglican church is at Calle San Lucas 19, a block south of the Carretera in Riberas del Pilar.

Christ Church Lakeside

The Sacrament of Holy Baptism will be received by Robert Britt (Bob) Glenn during the  Sunday, August 10, 9:30 a.m. worship service conducted by Fr. Danny Borkowski at Christ Church Lakeside. “Lord, Save Me!” based on Matthew 14:22-33 is the theme of Borkowski’s message.

After the service the members of the congregation will share a time of fellowship with the members of the Little Chapel by the Lake from about 10:25 until 11:10 a.m.
Deacon Rob Wells leads Bible Study at 10 a.m. each Tuesday morning in the Fellowship Hall. The group is currently exploring the Gospel of Mark. The Jerusalem Bible is used as the basic text due to its rich footnotes and commentary. Those wishing to join the study need not have attended previous sessions or bring a Bible. All opinions are respected and all questions answered as well as Wells, Borkowski and others find possible.

San Andrés

“His Voice that Speaks of Peace” is the homily theme chosen by Rev. Basil G. Royston, D.Min for the English Mass on Sunday, August 10, 9 a.m. in the Templo de San Andrés in downtown Ajijic.

Royston said about this week’s theme and message: “In time of great anguish, such as St. Paul himself experienced, Christ is always with us, calming the storm and bringing peace. We need this as much today as did the early followers of Christ in Biblical times.”

A group of expats interested in learning more about the Catholic Church and who wonder why Catholics do the things they do and about their beliefs is forming at San Andrés Parish. Presbyterian Church

On Sunday, August 10, Pastor Ross Arnold continues his series of sermons based upon The Psalms with “Give Praise to God” from Psalm 105.
Arnold said: “This Psalm relates the many wonders and miracles God performed for the Hebrew people. This week we focus on all God has done for us and how we, too, need to remember to praise him for his graciousness.”

The service begins at 10 a.m. Following the service the members gather in the garden for refreshments and fellowship. On this second of the month, the communal meal will feature hobo stew and bread.

Lakeside Presbyterian Church is in Riberas del Pilar, on the Carretera between Vigolari and S&S Auto. Watch for the LPC sign: “You have family at Lakeside!”

HU Song

The HU Song is a contemplative spiritual exercise offering participants opportunities for insight, inspiration and spiritual guidance. It is held at 10:30 a.m. on the third Saturday of every month at the Spiritual Center, Nicolas Bravo 17B, Ajijic. The next HU Song will be held on Saturday, August 16. The door is monitored and closed at 10:30 a.m.

Buddhist Community

The Heart of Awareness Buddhist Community meets in Ajijic for meditation and dharma teachings at 4:30 p.m. each Wednesday at Encarnation Rosas 9. The dharma talk on Wednesday, August 13 will be “The Paramity of Generosity.”

Heart of Awareness is a non-sectarian Buddhist practice community grounded in the original teachings of the Buddha as preserved in the Theravada/Vipassana tradition and includes people with Zen, Tibetan and Shambhala backgrounds as well as those with no prior meditation experience. Centers for Spiritual Living

The Centers for Spiritual Living is hosting a series of Friday night social events beginning at 5 p.m. on August 22. Participants are to bring a covered dish, salad or dessert and beverage for the evenings with friends, food, games, and laughter at Callejon San Antonio 7 in Ajijic. The teachings of Ernest Holmes are being explored one week at a time from 10:30 a.m. until noon each Tuesday. Arch Crane, Beth McDonald and Tim Schubert are leading the study of Living Science of Mind and studding the lessons with practical “real life” applications.

“A Thousand Names for Joy” by Byron Katie is the subject of the ongoing Thursday discussion group. The program begins with optional meditation from 10 to 10:20 a.m. followed by group discussion from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

Open Circle

Open Circle meets in the garden of the Lake Chapala Society each Sunday at 10 a.m. with coffee, tea, sandwich bites and fellowship.

The special Open Circle program at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, August 10 features favorite arias from the world’s favorite operas sung by members of the Guadalajara

Opera Workshop. Soprano María de Jesús Cárdenas, alto Teresa Banderas, tenor José Luis Villarreal and baritorne Ricardo Lavin will be accompanied by the Ajijic Chamber Orchestra. Local musicians include Rodrigo Leal Murillo, piano; Dani Medeles, viola; Juan Pablo Medeles, violin; supported by a complement of other instrumentalists from Guadalajara.
