Consulate get-together

Personnel from the U.S. Consul General in Guadalajara will hold an expat information event at Salon Paradise (next to San Javier Hospital Nuevo, across the street from Hard Rock Hotel) on  Friday, February 14, from noon to 3 p.m.

The venue is located at Paseo de los Cocoteros 55. All U.S. citizens are welcome to attend and learn about the services offered by the diplomatic mission and how to vote from abroad, among other topics. Bring your questions.

Charity Fashion Show

Alexander Daoud, owner of Alexander A Salon in Plaza Marina, is hosting his third charity event to support Aid to Families of Children with Cancer.

The event tales place at the Casa Magna Marriott Resort & Spa on Saturday, February 8. Doors open at 12:30 p.m., and a four-course luncheon will be served at 1 p.m., followed by a fabulous fashion show. Tickets for the event cost 500 pesos and may be purchased at Alexander A Salon.

The expert colorist and make-up artist will delight attendees of this luncheon with a fashion show extravaganza, featuring professional and expat models wearing designs by Gerardo Copado, and delicious jeweled treasures by NICE!

Additionally, two lucky participants will be selected for glamor makeovers! In 2019, Daoud raised 100,000 pesos for Mamás Unidas por la Rehabilitacíon de sus Hijos, better known as Pasitos de Luz. His 2020 fundraising goal is 150,000 pesos to children with cancer.

This is one of the programs of the Puerto Vallarta Rotary Club Sur, under the direction of Aurora de la Torre.

Valentine’s Jewelry Party

Just in time for Valentine’s Day shopping, New York jewelry designer June Rosen Lopez is opening up her home gallery in the Romantic Zone of Puerto Vallarta on February 8 and 9, from 1-7 p.m., for her annual Valentine’s Day party.

Everyone is invited to stop by and see her new jewelry collection, visit with friends, and find a Valentine’s Day gift or two.

This year, Rosen is celebrating the reality that she has been living in this wonderful city for 40 years! Much like our city, her collections have gone through many changes since she first started making jewelry in 1973. Still, one thing remains a constant – her classic jewelry pieces are affordable, wearable, and never go out of style.

Golf tournament

The Flamingos Golf Club, the oldest in the region, will host the 8th International Flamingos CANAMMEX Cup Riviera Nayarit 2020 on Saturday, February 15. This is a classic golf event featuring teams from Canada, the United States and Mexico. To register call 329-296-5006.

The 15th Annual Rincón de Guayabitos Artistic and Cultural Festival runs on consecutive Saturdays  thorough February: 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29.

Organized by the Compostela Municipal Hotel Association, the festival was started in 2005 to thank tourists for choosing to visit Rincón de Guayabitos and its environs. It’s become a showcase for different expressions of art over its 15 years of existence. The event includes a variety of performing arts in the town’s central plaza.

Chili Cook-off

pg28The eighth annual Puerto Vallarta Chili Cook-Off is scheduled for Saturday, February 22 at Parque Parota (in front of Hotel Puerto de Luna and across the street from the Fiesta Americana Hotel).

This popular fundraiser was previously held at El Rio Bar BBQ on the River Cuale. Kurt Sinner, owner of El Rio, did a great job in promoting the event over the past seven years. However, the growth in attendance from 2018 to 2019 was so big that Cook-Off Committee Chairman Jim Sullivan decided it was time to look for another venue.

Parque Parota’s large open space will permit even more attendees, more chili vendors each with more space (up to 30 vendors each with 3x3 meters of space), allow faster lines (for chili and beer), more activities, more bands, etcetera.

New for 2020: the Jay Sadler Beer Garden, Murphy’s Craft Beer Bar, Manny’s Bloody Mary Bar, the Twisted Palms Martini Bar, the Nacho Daddy Cocktail Lounge, the El Torito Rib Station, Fish Tacos by Pescadito, comida from Tacos Revolution, ice cream from Helartesano, and dessert from PV Cupcakes. And on our stage, some of the best musical groups from the Vallarta area. A full, fun day for the entire family.

Demonstrating their continuing commitment to the Cook-Off and to the Jay Sadler Project, Hollis, head BBQ Chef at El Rio BBQ, will be one of the Cook-Off judges.

The Chili Cook-Off is the main fundraising tool for the Jay Sadler Project, which works with the local Family Development Agency  (DIF), the Navy League of Vallarta and the municipal recreation director to provide resources to improve various institutions in the Banderas Bay area and Puerto Vallarta. These include day care centers, senior citizen homes, schools for the disabled, public schools in rural areas and other private charitable institutions.  They also provide building maintenance, repairs and install playgrounds in the community.

Raffles will be held throughout the day with winning tickets announced and posted.

Buying an advanced ticket not only saves you 50 pesos off the at-the-gate price but also allows you to enter the grounds early at 11:30 a.m. Ticket sales at the gate will not start until noon of February 22, and patrons will pay the full price of 300 pesos.

Advanced tickets are available at pvchilicookoff.com or participating restaurants in town.
