The Lake Chapala Chapter of Democrats Abroad is geared up to host the 2015 Annual General Meeting of Democrats Abroad Mexico, wrapped into a series of events scheduled for this weekend.
Hooking up with one of the hoses brought in with the huge shipment of equipment donated by Canada’s Firefighters Without Borders, grateful firemen and medical first responders from various Jalisco communities, members of the Lakeside Fire and Red Cross Assistance Group and guest dignitaries symbolized the flaming spirit of solidarity at a thank-you celebration held Wednesday, April 15 at the Hotel Real. Caring for children with physical disabilities and serious health conditions is a costly and demanding endeavor for underprivileged families. That is why the non-profit Programa Pro Niños Incapacitados del Lago, A.C. is a godsend to the parents of more than 140 lakeside youngsters who receive financial support to cover medical bills, therapeutic treatments, prostheses, mobility equipment, transportation costs and other expenditures.
Chapala’s second annual Expo Ganadera livestock show kicks into action Friday, April 24 with a packed program of activities and entertainment spectacles set to run through Monday, May 4 on the grounds of the J. González Gallo Lienzo Charro, located on Avenida Madero, opposite the Pemex service station.
Chapala Mayor Joaquin Huerta recently kicked off the local portion of Mexico’s annual Red Cross “Colecta,” a month-long drive for donations aimed at obtaining extra funds to help the local delegation maintain its emergency ambulance and clinic services in the area.
Yolanda Martinez is the most recently selected member of the Lake Chapala Society (LCS) board of directors. 
When Martinez returned to Mexico from Chicago 20 years ago, she built and opened Yoly’s, a full-service salon in Bugambilias Plaza. In the past two decades she has given generously to the community of her time and talents, serving on the boards of several organizations, including the Chamber of Commerce, the Cruz Roja and an organization of businesswomen.
Her goal at LCS is to help develop more programs and events for the Mexican community. As a move toward bringing more interaction between expats and Mexicans, Martinez will coordinate the Lake Chapala Society’s 60th anniversary party in November.
