Chili Cookoff steams up with novel enticements

The 37th Mexican National Chili Cookoff blasts off Friday, February 27 for a three-day run at the Tobolandia Water Park. This year sees a new layout for easier visitor access and an expanded entertainment program, along with the culinary contests, hourly raffles and giant shopper’s paradise that always draw throngs to lakeside’s largest and longest standing charity happening.

Drinking juices for vibrant health

Folks seeking insights on ways to recover or maintain optimum health may be interested in signing up for a introductory course on boosting the immune system and cellular nutrition by consuming fresh juices. The four-hour class scheduled for Thursday, January 22, 2 to 6 p.m., will be conducted by bilingual instructor Antonio Benvenuto at his home, Callejón de la Hacienda 112 in Villa Nova. 

Topics covered in the theoretic and practical curriculum include the electromagnetic properties of fruits and vegetables, ideal selection and blending of ingredients and the best timing for drinking different combinations. There will also be dance and exercise practices to round out the program. 

The course fee of 900 pesos includes all produce and a take-home manual. Advance registration is required due to limited enrollment capacity.

Fernando Gomez (center) and Steve Cross (not shown), owners of Casa Flores B&B, hosted a pre-Christmas movie day for the students and staff of the Jocotepec School for Special Children at Cinemas del Lago in Ajijic’s Bugambilias Mall. During the annual outing, the children saw an animated Disney film, complete with popcorn and beverages. Gomez and Cross also recently treated the 30 children and their guardians from the Villa Infantil orphanage to a holiday breakfast at El Jardin restaurant on the Ajijic plaza. Rosa Maria Alvarez Perez, the mother of Gomez, and also a supporter of both the school and La Villa, is shown at right. At left is Maritza Freyslinger, the school’s vice president.
