Local rookie pro set for PGA debut at Memorial

Carlos Ortiz, the 23-year-old Tapatio golfer who has taken the Web.com Tour (the developmental tour of the PGA Tour) by storm this year, will be in the field at the Memorial Tournament held at the Muirfield Village Golf Club in Ohio from May 29 to June 1 – his first PGA event.

In his first season as a professional Ortiz has won two of the eight Web.com Tour tournaments held this year and tops the money list with 363,058 dollars. His victories came at the El Bosque Championship in Leon, Mexico and at the Panama Claro Championship in Panama City.

Ortiz is certain to be part of the PGA Tour for next year and could join up with the world’s top golfers even sooner. Any player who wins three Web.com Tour events in a season automatically earns their PGA Tour card.

His lofty standing on the developmental tour permits Ortiz to play in seven PGA events during the remainder of the year. However, he says he would prefer to consolidate his position on the Web.com Tour and not lose any points advantage over his rivals. Those in the top 25 of the money list at year’s end are given PGA Tour memberships for the next season. There are 16 more Web.com Tour events between June and September.

Born in Guadalajara in 1991, Ortiz was a four-year all-conference performer for the University of North Texas from 2010-13 and helped lead the “Mean Green” to back-to-back conference titles in 2012 and 2013.

At the 2011 Summer Universiade, he was on the team that won the bronze medal. He also played on the Mexico team at the Eisenhower Trophy in 2010 and 2012 (runner-up finish).

His victories this year have moved Ortiz inside the top 200 in the official world golf rankings.
