Pro football league starts in Mexico next year

Mexico is launching its very first professional football league (the American variety, that is).

The Liga de Futbol Americano Profesional (LFA) will begin in February 2016 and, in its initial stage, consist of four teams, all based in Mexico City.

The majority of players will be from Mexico, although a few U.S. imports will be drafted in.

Salaries will be capped and each franchise will be independently owned.   The names of the teams will be released shortly.

Organizers of the LFA say they have based the league’s model on U.S. Major League Soccer, which started off with a few teams and has gradually expanded over the years.
