Atlas all but booked their spot in the Liga Mx “Clausura” soccer final, thanks to a 3-0 win over Tigres Wednesday evening at the Jalisco Stadium.
Only a disaster in the second leg of the semi-final, to be played in Monterrey on Saturday, May 21, 8 p.m., would prevent the Guadalajara team from reaching back-to-back finals. The winner of the semi-final awaits either America (Mexico’s richest team, based in the capital) or Pachuca in the final, also to be played over two legs, probably on May 26 and 29 (TBD).
Atlas reached the semis after downing local rivals Chivas in the quarters, thanks to a 2-1 win in the first leg, and a 1-1 tie in the second.
Their triumph in last season’s Liga Mx final was Atlas’ first title in 70 years, and only the second in the club’s history.
Chivas women
The Guadalajara Chivas women’s team have outshone their male counterparts, reaching the final of the Liga Mx Femenil, where they will face Pachuca in the first leg on Friday, May 20, before returning home to the Akron Stadium on Monday, May 23, 8:05 p.m., when a large, expectant crowd will hope to see the women lift the crown.
The Chivas-Pachuca match-up is a repeat of the first Liga Mx Femenil final played in 2017, the year Mexico’s women’s professional league was formed. Chivas won the title that season, the only championship in the team’s history.
