New ride offers unique view of zoo

Dubbed Skyzoo, the ski-style chairlift ride passes directly over a number of enclosures, affording those onboard a unique vantage point of the zoo’s elephants, buffalo, lions, white tigers, gorillas, black bears and Mexican wolves.

This slow paced 30-minute ride is as close as one can come in Mexico to riding in a hot air balloon over the African savanna. It also offers a spectacular but fleeting view from the edge of the Huentitan canyon, before making an about-turn and heading back toward the starting point.

Constructed by U.S. company Skytrans MFG at a cost of 20 million pesos, this is the first such ride to be installed at any zoo in Latin America. The lift consists of 140 pairs of seats, suspended at an average height of 15 meters, with metal barriers to prevent anyone from falling. The total distance covered on the ride is 1.7 kilometers.

The Zoologico Guadalajara is open daily during school holidays (March 25 to April 7) or from Wednesday to Sunday during term time. Opening hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
