Yakult supporting local civil hospitals

Established in 1999, this philanthropic civil association provides medical equipment and scholarships for hospital staff with the aim of supporting low-income patients at Guadalajara’s old Fray Antonio Alcalde Civil Hospital and the new Dr. Juan I. Menchaca Civil Hospital.

Last year Yakult donated over 200,000 pesos to the foundation. The aim this year is to raise 221,990 pesos to aid children in desperate need of kidney transplants.

Invented by Japanese scientist Minoru Shirota in 1935, Yakult is a unique, fermented milk drink which contains “friendly bacteria” said to benefit the digestive system.

Yakult has a factory in Tlajomulco and has been selling its produce in Mexico for over 30 years, with sales in Mexico now averaging over 3.4 million bottles per day. The Tlajomulco plant currently supplies all Yakult produce for the U.S. market, although a new factory is due to open in California in the fall.
