First drunk drivers banned from road

Almost 2,000 drivers have fallen foul of breath check road blocks since the program – known officially as Salvando Vidas (Saving Lives) but referred to colloquially as “El Torito” (“The Little Bull”)– took effect. Most choose to spend the statutory 36 hours in jail, although around one in ten seek the advice of lawyers who closely track traffic police on their nighttime operations in the Guadalajara metropolitan area.    Lawyers charge around 3,000 pesos to file an amparo (injunction) with a judge that might allow the transgressors to avoid spending any time in the cells.
