Assaults on bank customers on the rise

Attacks on bank customers who have just withdrawn large sums of cash are increasing, authorities said this week.

Osvaldo Rojas Robles, 34, was detained after being identified as a member of a gang that targeted a man who had withdrawn a large wad of cash from Banorte on Avenida Niños Heroes and Firmamento.

Posing as a customer standing in line, Rojas identified his target as he withdrew money from the cashier. He then signaled to other gang members waiting outside the branch to follow the target, who was subsequently assaulted and robbed of his cash near his office.

Rojas is also suspected of participating in a similar assault on a film producer who had just withdrawn 114,000 pesos from a bank on Avenida Americas. The incident was captured by a security video camera.

Authorities suggest clients withdrawing large sums ask bank officials if they can carry out the transaction behind closed doors.
