US Treasury takes aim at Guadalajara restaurant

The action pursuant to the Foreign Narcotics Kingpin Designation Act targets Heriberto Zazueta Godoy (a.k.a. Capi Beto), the presumed financial operator for Sinaloa cartel boss Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada Garcia.

The U.S. Treasury named the Tai Pen restaurant on Guadalajara’s Avenida Juan Palomar y Arias and two other businesses in Mazatlan, Sinaloa as  being ether owned or operated by Zazueta Godoy.

The Kingpin Act prohibits individuals or businesses in the United States from conducting financial or commercial transactions with designees, while any assets they hold under U.S. jurisdiction will be frozen.

The latest designation of the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) seeks to freeze the assets of Heriberto Zazueta Godoy, the presumed financial operator for Zambada Garcia

In February, Zazueta Godoy was indicted on drug trafficking and money laundering charges in the Northern District of Illinois.

“(He) has been shipping massive amounts of narcotics on the high seas for Zambada Garcia and the Sinaloa Cartel for years, even after he suffered the largest ever maritime seizure of cocaine in 2007,” said Director of the Office of Foreign Assets Control Adam J. Szubin.  “Today’s designation, combined with the efforts of our law enforcement partners, sends a clear message that the United States will continue to target and disrupt this violent drug network wherever it operates.”

OFAC has previously identified Zambada Garcia as a significant foreign narcotics trafficker.
