Tapatios make their voices heard

Citizens are taking the opportunity to voice their dissent in greater numbers than ever before.

2015 was a record year for demonstrations in Guadalajara, with 164 held from January through November, compared with 143 during the whole of 2014 and 105 in 2013.

Protestors who demonstrated on several occasions included yellow cab drivers upset at the competition from Uber, activists demanding the legalization of same-sex marriage, teachers opposing mandatory evaluations, corn farmers seeking greater government subsidies and relatives of disappeared persons calling for more effort by authorities in the search for their loved ones.

The poor quality of the metro area transportation network, danger to cyclists and pedestrians, threats toward journalists and support for the 43 missing students from Guerrero were some of the other causes that prompted citizens to take to the streets last year.
