Traffic cops ticket bikers for not wearing vests

Motorcyclists have criticized the decision by the Secretaría de Movilidad  (State Transportation Department) to start enforcing regulations obliging them to use bright, reflective vests (chalecos) to make them more visible.

The Jalisco Congress recently sent a missive to the Secretaría de Movilidad  (State Transportation Department) urging them to enforce and update regulations making the wearing of vests obligatory.

They also recommended that the items of clothing contain the license plate number of the motorcycle.

Laws passed in 2013 make the use of chalecos obligatory for anyone riding a bike with a capacity higher than 250cc. The regulations have been sketchily enforced until this week, when traffic cops ticketed 45 bikers.

Some state legislators want the measure applied to all motorcyclists, regardless of the  potency of the bike they are riding.

The lawmakers believe the measure will make it easier for authorities to identify criminals who prowl the city on motorbikes assaulting citizens and stealing their belongings.
