Sources suggest that the owners of the land, Walmart de Mexico are keen to develop the plot for high-rise apartments. Residents of Santa Teresita have submitted proposals to Guadalajara municipal authorities to build a neighborhood park.
As yet, Mayor Enrique Alfaro has not taken a public position on the issue, although some sources say he is inclined to side with neighbors. Environmentalists say the closure of the Aurrera store provides a rare opportunity to create a much needed green space amid Guadalajara’s concrete jungle.
