In addition to ending animal sacrifice, the petition calls on the municipal government to open new shelters and step up sterilization, vaccination and adoption programs.
Merilyn Gomez Pozos, director of Animal Rights at Guadalajara city hall, said the issue of sacrifice is just one of many issues affecting animals, and that improving education regarding the care of pets is arguably more important.
Gomez Pozos confirmed that between 60 and 70 cats and dogs are put down each week in the Guadalajara municipality.
