Women march to protest gender violence

Almost 500 demonstrators took to the streets of Guadalajara to demand an end to violence and discrimination against women.

Public figures such as Jalisco’s first independent deputy Pedro Kumamoto were in attendance, along with Maria Morfin Otero, the head of the Commission on Human Rights and Gender Equality in Guadalajara. “We want to show solidarity with women who have been victims of violence and make the problem visible,” Morfin Otero said. “From sexist comments on the street to femicides, we are asking that they activate all of the mechanisms necessary to provide security for women.”

The government of Jalisco issued a so-called “gender alert,” in February, bringing a series of preventative and security measures into effect. The alert is seen as a clear concession that systematic violence against women is a problem in Jalisco.

Similar demonstrations were carried out in 26 states and 40 cities throughout the country.
