John Kerry confidant makes a call

Tanya Anderson, the U.S. consul general in Guadalajara, welcomed a distinguished visitor to the city last week.

David Thorne, senior advisor to U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, took part in discussions with 15 local business leaders and met with government representatives from Aguascalientes, Colima, Jalisco and Nayarit, the four states covered by the Guadalajara consular district.

Since taking up his appointment in August 2013, Thorne has spearheaded the effort to position economic and commercial issues more prominently within the U.S. foreign policy landscape. He is also working to elevate the importance of entrepreneurship, technology and innovation in the U.S. State Department’s promotion of global prosperity.

A former Vietnam veteran and businessman, Thorne graduated from Yale University in 1966, where he roomed with Kerry. His twin sister Julia was Kerry’s first wife.  Thorne served as U.S. Ambassador to Italy from 2009 to 2013.
