Parade honors Mexican Revolution

For the second year in a row, Guadalajara’s annual parade observing the November 1910 start of the Mexican Revolution took place along Avenida Chapultepec instead of in the historic center, due to ongoing work on the third Tren Ligero (subway) line.

In keeping with tradition, the parade feted stand-out local sportsmen and women.  Two athletes were recognized as joint winners of the State Sports Prize (Premio Estatal del Deporte): diver German Sanchez, a silver medallist in the Rio Olympics; and judoka Lenia Ruvalcaba, gold medallist in the Paralympics.

This year’s parade featured almost 2,000 participants, including scores of children performing clever gymnastic and bicycle routines.

Receiving the warmest applause of the 20 institutions taking part were the Guadalajara firefighters (bomberos), some of whom took off their shirts to display their well-toned bodies, much to the delight of some in the crowd.

In addition to marching bands, charros, gun-toting soldiers and motorcycle cops, seven floats depicting scenes from the Mexican Revolution took part in the colorful parade.
