Cops end airport protest

Around 100 state police officers, kitted out in full riot gear, disbanded a protest by around 40 community farmers at the Guadalajara Airport Tuesday.

The Jalisco state government obtained a judicial order to clear a protest that had surrounded the entrance to the airport’s terminal for more than a week.

Government Secretary Roberto López Lara said citizens had urged authorities to take action and remove the protestors.  The local farmers’ cooperative (ejido) are seeking compensation  for territory expropriated for the construction of the airport nearly 60 years ago.  The federal government has offered a minute fraction of the money they are demanding.

On Wednesday, some 50 police officers stood guard around the airport in case the protestors thought about returning.  Ejido representatives said the tough stance of the Jalisco government will not make them give up their fight.
