City shelter ready for Mexican deportees

Civic organizations are taking steps to assist deportees as concerns grow for the fate of thousands of undocumented Mexican migrants living in the United States.

The Guadalajara NGO known as FM4 will offer accommodation at its migrant shelter for all Mexicans who have been deported from the United States and do not have a place to stay.

When Donald Trump’s immigration policies kick in, FM4 representatives say they expect to see an increased flow of deported Mexicans passing through Guadalajara as they return from the border to their homes in other parts of the country.

At its shelter near the railway tracks in Colonia Los Arcos, FM4 attends to around 500, mostly Central American migrants each month.  They are given food, cleaning utensils and a bed until they are ready to continue on their journey north.

FM4’s Bernardo Senadeni Martínez told a local newspaper this week that the flow of migrants traveling to the United States over the past month has not let up, and that they do not seem unduly concerned by the tough immigration measures Trump has promised to enforce.

Even if Trump is able to carry through with his promises and implement mass deportations, it will still be a long time before any real effect starts to be seen in Mexico, Martínez noted.
