Free parking for one month

Parking in a significant area of the Guadalajara metropolitan will be a lot less expensive – for a short while at least.

Motorists got a break after city inspectors this week “immobilized” some 2,400 parking meters in the Guadalajara municipal area, including all those in the historic downtown core.

The action was taken following a legal ruling that gave the green light to city hall to strip the firm Metro Meters of the concession they have to operate the municipal parking meter network.  A year ago, Guadalajara city hall  accused the company of non-compliance of contract, claiming that large sums of money obtained from fines were being siphoned away.

The parking meters in question, including the slots for coins, have been covered with tape bearing the words “Parquimetro Inutilizado.”

A city hall official said on Tuesday that free parking would continue for one month, after which time a new meter operating system should be ready to be put in place.

Metro Meters legal representatives say they will continue to fight the concession revocation order in the courts.
