Bridge, tunnel to eliminate Periferico traffic lights

Drivers on the city beltway (Periferico) can expect delays when two major road works start later this month – although the long-term benefits will be considerable.

Construction of a new tunnel and flyover will lead to the removal of two of the Periferico’s most annoying traffic light intersections and substantially improve traffic flow, especially at peak hours, Zapopan Mayor Pablo Lemus said this week.

The two road works are planned at the traffic light crossings at Avenida José Parres Arias (Los Belenes) and 5 de Mayo (San Juan Ocotan).  These Zapopan intersections are only a few kilometers apart, meaning that traffic delays are inevitable during part of the construction period. Both projects should be completed by the beginning of 2018, at a cost of around 300 million pesos, Lemus said.
