Gun turn-in program set to start in metro area on April 24

A gun turn-in campaign is set to start in five metro-area municipalities on April 24.

Citizens will be able to exchange their guns for domestic electrical equipment, computers or tablets, depending on the value of the weapon.

The campaign is being carried out by the 15th Military Zone of the Mexican Army, in conjunction with state and municipal governments, and the NGO Mexico SOS.

Open-air modules where weapons can be handed in will be set up in the central plazas of Guadalajara (Plaza Liberación), Zapopan (Plaza de las Americas), Tonala, Tlaquepaque and Tlajomulco.

Citizens who bring in guns for exchange will not face any legal questions, even though most of the weapons will probably be unlicensed.

Hours will be from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and the campaign will run until June 24.

SOS Mexico coordinator Adolfo Caballero said the aim is to collect around 500 weapons during the two-month campaign.

Mexico SOS and the Jalisco state government will contribute the devices to be given in exchange for the weapons. Both have pledged 1.2 million pesos to the campaign.

Caballero said he did not believe authorities at this time plan to start a state-wide “road block” program to check vehicles for weapons. While these have been employed regularly by previous state administrations, the constitutionality of the operations is still in question, he noted.
