Drunk Uber driver kills two

Two employees of the Jalisco Transportation Department (Secretaria de Movilidad) died after being struck by a car driven by an Uber driver, allegedly under the influence of alcohol.

The two men, a traffic official and a maintenance staffer, were helping erect signage for speed cameras on the city Periferico (beltway) at the intersection with Puerto de Guaymas at around 3:30 a.m. on Saturday morning.

According to reports, the driver of the Nissan March plowed into the two men at high speed after ignoring the safety cones set in place to notify motorists of the work going on.  He was unhurt. As he was being detained, officers noted alcohol on his breath.

One of the victims, who was painting signs on the asphalt road surface when he was struck, survived the incident but died later at the Centro Médico de Occidente.

A few colleagues of the victims reportedly criticized their superiors for deploying Semov staff to the Periferico on a Friday night when the number of people driving under the influence increases significantly.

The two deceased were identified as Salvador Ramírez Madrigal y Ramón Villalobos.
