Guadalajara city hall is reaching out to restaurant wait staff whose livelihoods have been hit hard by the coronavirus lockdown.
Around 600 waiters are to receive biweekly food parcels for as long as the health contingency continues.
City councilor Rocío Aguilar Tejada said 75,000 pesos was raised to purchase the dispensas at a much-reduced rate from the local Food Bank. She said the waiters are getting this special treatment because around 80 percent of their salaries come from tips.
The waiters have also agreed to take an online course that will provide them with certification of their profession. “Currently they do not have any document that supports that, all they have is their experience,” Aguilar Tejeda said.
The first 150 parcels were distributed earlier this week.
